SYMPTOMS

If you try to connect your Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical pointing device to the USB port on a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device.

CAUSE

This error may occur when the Hidclass.sys file is not found on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, verify that the Hidclass.sys file is located on the hard disk, and then use one of the following methods.

Verify That the Hidclass.sys File is in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers Folder

To verify that the file is located in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Hidclass.sys.
  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  4. In the list of found files, verify that the Hidclass.sys file is located in the following folder:

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

If the Hidclass.sys file is missing from the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder, extract a new copy of that file from the Windows 98 CD-ROM, and then install the file in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder. To do this, use method 1.

If you do not have the Windows 98 CD-ROM, use method 2.

Method 1: Reinstall Missing Files from CD-ROM

  1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Windows Setup from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type sfc, and then click OK.
  4. Click Extract one file from installation disk.
  5. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type the name of the missing file, and then click Start.
  6. In the Restore from box, type drive:\Win98, where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
  7. In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, and then click OK.
  8. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  9. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
  10. Connect your IntelliMouse pointing device to the USB port on your computer.

Method 2: Copy Files from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs Folder

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the following folder:

    C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

  3. Right-click the Cabs folder, and then click Copy.
  4. Locate the following folder:

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

  5. Right-click the Drivers folder, and then click Paste.
  6. Connect your IntelliMouse pointing device to the USB port on your computer.
