SYMPTOMS
After you remove and then reinstall Internet Information Server (IIS) on your Microsoft Exchange server, the following Exchange services may not start:
- Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
- Microsoft Exchange POP3
- Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
- Microsoft Exchange Event
When you try to manually start the Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service, you may receive the following error message:

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, reinstall Exchange, and then reapply the most recent service pack. To do this, follow these steps:
Step 1: Back Up the Data
Complete an online backup of the Microsoft Information Store and System State data.
For additional information about how to back up the Microsoft Information Store data, search Exchange Server Help for "Back Up Exchange Data."
For additional information about how to back up the System State data, search the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Help for "Back up files to a file or a tape."
Step 2: Reinstall Exchange Server
- Insert the Exchange CD in the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then double-click

:\Setup\I386\Setup.exe (wheredrive
is the drive that contains the Exchange CD).
Note Make sure that you run the Setup.exe file with the /disasterrecovery switch. - In the Exchange installation wizard, click Next.
- In the Action column, click Disaster Recovery for each installed component, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Installation Wizard.
- Reapply all Exchange service packs and hotfixes.
