You cannot set permissions on folders in a mailbox in Exchange 2000 Server or in Exchange Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

If you try to use Microsoft Outlook to grant permissions to any folder in a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server mailbox or in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox, you may receive the following error message:

The Modified permissions could not be saved. The client operation failed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the permissions at the mailbox level are written incorrectly. The permissions at the mailbox level may be written incorrectly when you use virus scanners scan to drive M or when you back up drive M by using a file level backup.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, grant Delegate access to any mailbox account, apply the Delegate access, and then remove Delegate access from the account. This action forces a re-write of the Access Control Lists (ACL) at the mailbox level, which propagates to the folders.

To grant, apply, and then remove Delegate access:

  1. In the Microsoft Outlook 2002 client, click Tools, click Options, and then click Delegates.
  2. Click Add, and then click any user in the global address list field.
  3. In the Permissions page, click OK, click Apply, and then click OK again.
  4. Click Tools, click Options, click Delegates, and then remove the user that you added in step 2.

After you complete this procedure you can add permissions to the folders in the mailbox.
