Article ID: 323513

Article Last Modified on 10/27/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q323513

SYMPTOMS

When you use the "Hide specified Control Panel Applets" policy with the file names of the CPL files, the policy may not work. Although policies are not available with Windows XP Home Edition, you can manually set the registry entries that control this behavior, and you may then experience this symptom.

CAUSE

There are two locations where the CPL file names are checked against the strings that are passed in the policy. One of them checks CPL files with a single tool, the other CPL files are checked with multiple tools. The latter version did not correctly prepare the strings for comparison.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Date Time Version Size File name
   -------------------------------------------------------
   31-May-2002 14:55 6.0.2600.46 8,223,232 Shell32.dll

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
