You receive the "Save not completed. File rename failed." error message when you try to save a file in Excel X for Mac

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a file in Microsoft Excel X, you may receive the following error message:

Save not completed. File rename failed.

If you click Cancel, Excel saves the file. This problem occurs only when you try to save the file for the second time. If you save the file by using a new name, the issue does not occur.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you are using Symantec Norton AntiVirus 8. Beta 2 for OS X.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact Symantec to find out whether an update for Norton AntiVirus 8. Beta 2 for OS X is available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Click Cancel when you receive the message. Your document should be saved.

    Note Confirm that your document has been saved.
  • Save the document by using a new name. To do this, click Save As on the File menu.
  • Prevent the Norton AntiVirus program from starting. Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.Important These steps may increase your security risk.     System:Library:StartupItems
