MacOFFX: Cannot Install Upgrade Version of Office v. X for Mac When Office 4.2 Is Installed

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade to Microsoft Office v. X for Mac, you may receive a message similar to the following:

Upgrade Verification
This software is an upgrade to an earlier version of the software.
To continue installation, click Browse, and then select the folder that contains the earlier version of the software (Microsoft Office 2001 folder, for example). The folder can be located on either your computer or the CD-ROM from which you originally installed the earlier version of the software.

This behavior occurs if you try to install the upgrade version of Microsoft Office v. X for Mac on a computer that has one of the following programs installed on it:

  • Microsoft Office 4.2.


-or-

  • Any Office 4.2 programs, such as Microsoft Excel 5.

Setup does not find any qualifying programs during the compliance search. As a result, you cannot upgrade to Office v. X for Mac.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Office 4.2 programs are not eligible for upgrade to Office v. X for Mac. You cannot install the upgrade version of Office v. X for Mac unless a qualifying Office product is already installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must obtain the full version of Office v. X for Mac or obtain a qualifying product. For more information about your upgrade eligibility, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
