SYMPTOMS
Modem settings for flow control, compression, port speed, and other settings may not be retained. This may occur after you remove your modem and then re-insert or re-install the modem.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. After you apply this hotfix, restart your computer, and then configure the default settings for your modem in Device Manager:
- Click Start, point to Program Files, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand the modem branch, right-click your modem, and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click Change Default Preferences.
- Configure the modem settings that you want to use, click OK, and then click OK.
Windows XP

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Service Pack 1.
