SYMPTOMS

After you review and accept changes that have been made to a Word 2002 document, deleted text may re-appear in the document.

CAUSE

After you accept individual changes while you are using the Track Changes feature, deleted text is not removed. Because of this, deleted text may be re-introduced into a file. The acceptance of a change before the acceptance of deleted text overrides the option to accept the text as being deleted. This is true because the deleted text was included in the earlier change that was an insertion of new text.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  1. Start Word 2002, and then open the document that you want to review.
  2. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Reviewing.
  3. On the View menu, click Print Layout to use the Print Layout view. On the right side of the document, balloons that contain comments, formatting changes, deletions, and other changes are visible. If you do not see any balloons on the right hand side of the document:
    1. On the Reviewing toolbar, click Show.
    2. Click Comments, Insertion and Deletions, and Formatting.
  4. Put the insertion point at the beginning of the document.
  5. On the Reviewing toolbar, click Next.

    The first balloon is selected. You can now review the change to accept it or decline the change by clicking Reject Change/Delete Comment.
  6. After you review all the changes, click Accept All Changes in Document in the Accept Changes box.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
