SharePoint Portal Server Does Not Start After You Install MDAC 2.7

SYMPTOMS

If you install the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.7 update, the SharePoint Portal Server service may not start, and you may see event ID messages that are similar to the following event ID messages in the Application Log:

1/15/2002 6:40:35 PM SharePoint Portal Server
EventID: 16387
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server has shut down.

1/15/2002 6:40:35 PM SharePoint Portal Server
EventID: 24578
Upgrade to version 10.145.4629.0000 failed. The error code returned was 0x80070426.

1/15/2002 6:29:03 PM MSExchangeIS
EventID: 9542
Initialization of external interface WIN32 failed; Error ecServerOOM.

1/15/2002 6:29:03 PM MSExchangeIS
Initialization of external interface OLEDB failed; Error Unknown error.

1/15/2002 6:28:57 PM Microsoft Search
EventID: 3057
The plug-in manager <MSSearch.OleDbHandler> in could not be initialized.


You may also see event ID messages that are similar to the following event ID messages in the System Log:

1/15/2002 6:42:48 PM DCOM
EventID: 10002
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is:
{9DA0E106-86CE-11D1-8699-00C04FB98036}
The user is SYSTEM/NT AUTHORITY, SID=S-1-5-18.


WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, set all three of the following SharePoint Portal Server services to Manual before you install the MDAC 2.7 update.

  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store (MSExchangeIS)
  • Microsoft Search (MSSearch)
  • SharePoint Portal Service (MSDMServ)

After you have finished installing the MDAC 2.7 update, reset the services that are listed in this section to Automatic, and then restart SharePoint Portal Server.
