SYMPTOMS

If you use the User State Migration Tool to migrate user account information, two Inbox icons may be displayed in Microsoft Outlook. However, both icons point to the same mailbox.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because, if you migrate user settings from Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 to a later version of Outlook, the Migapp.inf file causes the ScanState.exe program to migrate an extra Windows registry key.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, edit the Migapp.inf file:

  1. Start Windows Explorer, and then browse to the location of the User State Migration Tool files.
  2. Right-click Migapp.inf, and then click Open With.
  3. Click Notepad in the Programs list, and then click OK.
  4. Scroll to the following section of the Migapp.inf file:

    [Outlook98.97 Delreg.9X]

  5. Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the following line:

    HKR\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\* [001e6603]

This line now looks similar to the following line:

    ;HKR\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\* [001e6603]

  6. Scroll to the following section of the Migapp.inf file.

    [Outlook98.97 Delreg.NT]

  7. Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the following line:

    HKR\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\* [001e6603]

This line now looks similar to the following line:

    ;HKR\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\* [001e6603]

  8. Click Save on the File menu.
  9. Quit Microsoft Notepad.
  10. Run the ScanState.exe program again to migrate the user account settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
