SYMPTOMS

You may notice inconsistency in device status between Device Manager and HotPlug Manager for the Dell PERC3/qc and PERC3/DC RAID controllers. This may confuse the user, who may think that the RAID controller is not working properly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a bug in the HotPlug Manager (HotPlug.dll). When the RAID controller is hot plugged into the system, the PnP Manager tries to install the driver. The Device Manager receives the correct device status from the PnP Manager after the driver installation is completed. However, the HotPlug Manager queries the status before the installation is completed. As a result, the wrong device status is returned, which causes the HotPlug Manager to display an incorrect status Code 31 (CM_PROB_FAILED_ADD).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
