XCLN: The Exchange Multimedia Extension Causes a Memory Leak in Outlook

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Outlook connected to Exchange 2000 Server with a multimedia mail item, you may receive the following error message:

The add-in "[PATH]\EMOlClnt.dll" could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu. Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows or programs and try again.

This problem may occur if:

  • You are using Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002. -and-


  • You are installing the Exchange 2000 multimedia extension in Outlook. -and-


  • There are over 900 mail items, which include multimedia messages (such as voice messages). -and-


  • There is a referring Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) property.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because of the Exchange 2000 Server multimedia extension. A memory leak occurs in Outlook.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. The Japanese version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table.

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3.
