This article was previously published under Q319170

SYMPTOMS

Under the following conditions, two printers may receive the same TCP/IP port:

  1. Two administrators are simultaneously and remotely connected to a Terminal Services computer, and both are adding printers with new standard TCP/IP ports.
  2. The two administrators finish the Add Port Wizard at almost the exact same time.

Under these conditions, the last port that was created is assigned to both newly-created printers.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a race condition in the Add Port Wizard.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, make sure that two administrators do not simultaneously create new printers with new ports.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
