SYMPTOMS
When you are using the DnsQuery APIs to query for a WINS Reverse Lookup (WINSR) record, your program may generate an access violation error message.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name -------------------------------------------------------- 27-Feb-2002 10:19 5.0.2195.4985 135,952 Dnsapi.dll 27-Feb-2002 10:19 5.0.2195.4985 95,504 Dnsrslvr.dll
WORKAROUND
Because the records are not directly useable by the client, the records should not be queried from a remote computer. WINSR records are designed for internal DNS server usage, to make reverse lookup of WINS-only clients possible for DNS-only-based clients.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
