SYMPTOMS

OLE32 functionality with STGStorage calls has changed between Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. Windows 2000 does not use MemoryMap on opened files. This can cause slow access to files or excessive network use.

This may cause using OLE operations that are accessed from a Netware share to be even slower because by default the Microsoft Redirector performs read ahead caching where possible.

One scenario involves updating links by using Excel. The file copy works fine; however, because updating links invokes OLE storage functions, when the linked files are on a Netware server, the update is typically very slow.
