SYMPTOMS

If you try to log on to a Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000 domain, and an account lockout policy is configured to lock out domain user accounts after a certain number of incorrect logon attempts, your account may be locked out after one half or one third of the allowed incorrect password logon attempts.

  • If the update that is described in the following article has not been applied to the computer, the account lockout may occur after one third of the allowed incorrect password logon attempts.
  • If the update that is described in the following article has been applied to the computer, the account lockout may occur after one half of the allowed incorrect password logon attempts.

CAUSE

An internal logon function invokes a second connection attempt to the server IPC$ resource, and this occurs during the clean up process that occurs after an incorrect password logon attempt.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: This update supercedes the update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition only:
