This article was previously published under Q317744

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Exchange LDAP management agent (MA), which uses Cdir_ldp.exe, many objects may be deleted unexpectedly if you are using Delta or Full mode. Additionally, the following error may be logged in the Zscript.log file:

Unable to read LDAP message (error -1)

CAUSE

This error occurs if network connectivity is lost during the discovery process. Before you install the hotfix that is described in this article, the "Unable to read LDAP message" error is not marked as an error message. Therefore, the %error% test condition that is located in the Mascript.scr file is not met after the "Execute Cdir_ldp.exe" statement and before the "Execute Importt.exe" statement. This allows the synchronization engine (Importt.exe) to run even though Cdir_ldp.exe has not successfully completed the discovery process against Microsoft Exchange Server.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next version of Microsoft Metadirectory Services that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Full mode and Delta mode for Cdir_ldp.exe differ only in the manner in which Cdir_ldp.exe writes the import file. In Full mode (before you apply this hotfix), all deleted objects are excluded from the Import file. Therefore, if the synchronization engine (Importt.exe) runs in Full mode and communication is lost, the import file is incomplete and all of the missing objects are deleted from the metaverse.

In Delta mode, Cdir_ldp.exe compares objects in Exchange and in the Connector space to determine if objects should be deleted. This causes the CD object to be looked up in the Connector space. If the object is missing, a deletion transaction is written to the import file. This is an example of a deletion record in the import file:

-LDAPOBJECTDEL: DEL
-dn:
n=ChesterC,cn=Recipients,ou=MMS,o=Microsoft,ma=ExchangeMA,DsaName=MMSServer,ou=Applications,dc=microsoft,dc=com
