SYMPTOMS
When you start your Windows 2000-based computer with the Physical Address Extension (/PAE) switch turned on, the Hibernate option may still be available on the Advanced tab of the Power Options tool in Control Panel. Hibernation should not be allowed in PAE mode, and if hibernation occurs, your computer may stop responding (hang), and you may receive an error message on a blue screen.
CAUSE
This problem is caused by a code bug in the PAE kernel. Because of this bug, hibernation support flags are not correctly disabled.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
