How to Manually Remove the Small Business Server 2000 Fax Server Component

SUMMARY

This article describes how to manually remove the Fax Server component from a Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 installation. This procedure may be necessary if you are unable to remove the Fax Server component by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

To completely remove the SBS Fax Server component:

  1. Stop the Microsoft Shared Fax service in the Services MMC.
  2. Stop the Print Spooler service in the Services MMC.
  3. Open the Printers tool in Control Panel, and then unshare the Fax printer.
  4. Delete the following files and folders (including subfolders), where number is a number between 0 and 9:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Shared Fax
    %SYSTEMROOT%\addins\Fxsext.ecf
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Help\fxs*.*
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\FxsTmp\
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Fxsapi.dll
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Fxsxp32.dll
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\number\Fxsapi.dll
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\number\Fxsdrv4.dll
    %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\number\Fxstiff.dll

    Note that if multiple numbered folders exist, you must delete the files in each subfolder.
  5. Remove the Microsoft Shared Fax command from the Programs menu by deleting the Microsoft Shared Fax folder from one of the following two locations:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Shared Fax

    %SYSTEMROOT%\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Shared Fax

    NOTE: The "C:\Documents and Settings" folder is present on new installations of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or SBS 2000. The %SYSTEMROOT%\Profiles folder is present on SBS 2000 upgrades from SBS 4.5.
  6. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe), and then delete the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{A41E15DA-AD35-43EF-B9CC-FE948F1F04C0}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\Fax
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\SharedFax
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SHAREDFAX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\Microsoft Shared Fax

  7. Restart the computer.
