SUMMARY

This article describes how use Internet Information Services (IIS) Migration Wizard to migrate a Web server configuration to a different computer.

IIS Migration Wizard migrates Web server configuration settings, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type information, and content to Windows 2000 Server and IIS 5.0 from another Web server. To use IIS Migration Wizard, you require the following system configuration:

How to Install the IIS Migration Wizard Source Component

You must install the source component of IIS Migration Wizard on the computer whose settings you want to migrate.

NOTE: To use IIS Migration Wizard on a UNIX-based or Netscape-based Web server, you must install Perl 5.x. You can obtain Perl 5.x from either the Windows 2000 Resource Kit compact disc (CD) or the following Perl Web site:

How to Install the IIS Migration Wizard Source Component on a Windows-based Computer

  1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
  2. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD, where Drive is the drive that contains the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD:

    Drive:\Apps\MigrationWizard

  3. Double-click IISv5MigrationUtility_x86.exe.
  4. Click Next, click the Web server on which you want to install the Migration utility (if more than one server is listed), and then click Next.
  5. Click to select the Install the source component check box, click to clear the Install the target component check box if it is selected, and then click Next.
  6. Click Next, click Next, click Next, click to clear the View the README file check box, and then click Finish.
  7. Quit Windows Explorer.

How to the Install IIS Migration Wizard Source Component on a UNIX-based Computer

  1. Log on to the computer as a root.
  2. Use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to copy the IISv5MigrationUtility-ApacheSource.tar file to a temporary folder.

    This file is located in the following folder on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD:

    Drive:\Apps\MigrationWizard

  3. Type the following command:

    tar -x iisv5migrationutility-apachesource.tar

  4. In the temporary folder in which you extracted the .tar file, type the following command:

    perl install.pl

How to Install the Target Component

  1. Log on to the target computer as an administrator.
  2. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD, where Drive is the drive that contains the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD:

    Drive:\Apps\MigrationWizard

  3. Double-click IISv5MigrationUtility-TargetOnly_x86.exe.
  4. Click Next, click the Web server on which you want to install the Migration utility (if more than one server is listed), and then click Next.
  5. Click Next, click Next, click Next, click to clear the View the README file check box, and then click Finish.
  6. Quit Windows Explorer.

How to Migrate the Web Server Configuration

  1. Use an account that has administrative privileges on both the source and the target computers to log on to the target computer.
  2. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then navigate to the following virtual folder on the source computer, where host is either the host name or the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the source computer:

    http://host/iismu/welcome.htm

  3. Type your user name, type your password, and then type the domain (if applicable) in the corresponding boxes, and then click OK.
  4. On the Welcome to the Microsoft IIS v.5 Migration Wizard page that is displayed, click Next, and then click Next.
  5. Type either the host name, the NetBIOS name, or the IP address of the source computer in the Computer box (for example, 192.168.1.3), and then click Next.
  6. If you are prompted to authenticate your logon credentials, type your user name, type your password, and then type the domain in the corresponding boxes, and then click Next.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click to select the check boxes of the virtual servers (Web sites) that you want to migrate.

    If you want to migrate all virtual servers, click Select All.
  9. Click to clear the Migrate file security settings (if available) check box if you do not want to import the file security settings from the source Web server.

    NOTE: If you import the file security settings from the source Web server, ensure that you have already created the users and the groups to which the file security settings apply.
  10. Click Next, verify that your migration settings are correct, and then click Next.
  11. When you receive the following message, click OK:

    You are about to start the migration process, are you sure you wish to do this?

    The Web server configuration is migrated. The migration process may take several minutes to over an hour or more to complete depending on your Web server configuration.

    NOTE: During this time, the source computer configuration is downloaded to the target computer and saved in a cabinet (.cab) file that is stored in the following default location, where Host is either the host name or the IP address of the source computer:

    drive:\Winnt\System32\inetsrv\iismu\Host.cab

    You can use this file to migrate the IIS configuration to other Web server computers.
  12. On the The migration was successful! page, review the The following warnings occurred during the migration process list for information about additional steps that you must take to complete the migration.
  13. Click the first click here link to view and save the migration log file.
  14. Click the second click here link to save the source computer configuration .cab file.
  15. Click Finish, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:

    The Web page you are viewing is trying to close the window.

How to Remove the Source Component

When you are finished migrating the settings from the source computer, remove the IIS Migration Wizard source component to prevent possible security issues that may arise. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft IIS v.5 Migration Utility, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. When you receive the "Confirm File Deletion" message, click Yes.
  5. When the program is removed, click OK, click OK, and then click Close.
  6. Restart the computer.

Troubleshooting

To verify that the IIS configuration has migrated without error:

  • Verify that the IP address assignment for each virtual server is correct.
  • Verify that the content folders for each virtual server are correctly identified.
  • View the migration log file for additional information about possible error conditions that occurred during migration.
