SYMPTOMS

A remote procedure call (RPC) with SSL may not work, and may generate an "Error 5, Access Denied" error message. This may occur even if the SSL three-way handshake is successful.

CAUSE

RPC only looks for certificates in the CA store, and does not look in the ROOT store. Because of this, RPC cannot find certificates in the ROOT store.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
