256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you start Outlook 2002, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Outlook cannot run the add-in. Microsoft Outlook cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer error 1605.

If you start Outlook with the /safe command-line option in effect, you may receive the error message six times before Outlook starts. However, subsequent starts of Outlook may not generate the error message.

You may receive the error message twice when you click Customize on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because a previously installed component of Outlook 2000 was not completely removed during the upgrade to Outlook 2002.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, delete two keys from the registry.

  • The first registry key references the Fldpub.dll file, a component of Net Folders that is not supported in Outlook 2002. Removing this registry key resolves the behavior that results from clicking Customize on the Tools menu.
  • The second registry key references add-ins in Outlook. Removing this registry key resolves the behavior that resulted from starting Outlook 2002 with the /safe command-line option in effect.
