SYMPTOMS
The DNS service on your Windows 2000 DNS server with logging enabled may stop responding (hang) and generate an access violation error message. Your event logs may show Events 5504 and 5506 just before the service hangs.
CAUSE
Certain queries to the DNS server (like a reverse lookup) result in a response that contains a damaged data section, and this can occur when the data in the packet uses compression. The damaged data packet causes the buffer to be overrun, which causes the DNS service to generate an access violation error message and hang.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, disable logging on the DNS server:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
- Right-click the server, and then click Properties.
- On the Logging tab, click to clear every check box under Debug Logging Options, and then click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
