APPLIES TO

This article was previously published under Q314034

SYMPTOMS

When you use the New Contact Wizard to create a new contact, if you type information in only the Initials, Full name, or Display name boxes on the first page of the wizard, when you click Next, you may receive the following error message from the Microsoft Active Directory Exchange Extension:

The operation failed. ID no: 80004005 Microsoft Active Directory - Exchange Extension

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the First name and Last name boxes are empty. When these boxes are empty, the address generator is passed blank fields and returns the error 80004005. The address generator expects fields that contain data so that it can search the directory to generate a unique alias.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

301378 XGEN: How to Obtain the Latest Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this fix, the code tries to use the Initials box and the Full name box to generate an alias if those boxes contain data.
