Works 4.5: "This Program Is Not Compatible" Error Message After Upgrade to Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft Works after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

This program is not compatible...and may need to be reinstalled....

If you attempt to set Windows Compatibility mode for Works, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Compatibility modes cannot be set on this program because it is part of Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To use resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Works CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the auto-run program from starting.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  3. Browse to the MSWorks folder on the CD-ROM.
  4. Double-click Setup.exe, and then follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Works.
  5. After Works is reinstalled, browse in Windows Explorer to the folder where Works is installed.
  6. Right-click Msworks.exe, and then click Properties.
  7. On the Compatibility tab, click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box, point to the arrow, and then click Windows 98/Windows Me.
  8. Click OK.
