SYMPTOMS

When you migrate Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 users to Exchange 2000 with Group Policy set for a minimum password length, the Migration Wizard may not create user accounts in Active Directory.

CAUSE

The Migration Wizard generates a random password that is eight characters long. This problem may occur if Group Policy for a minimum password length is set to more than eight characters. In that situation, the Migration Wizard does not create the user accounts in Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3.
