SYMPTOMS
When you try to change folders at a command prompt by using a short folder name (also known as an 8.3 folder name), you may receive the following error message:
This problem may occur if the following conditions exist:
- You are running a command prompt.
- Your current folder is on a network drive.
- The network drive was connected by using Distributed File System (DFS).
- You try to change to a folder on the same network drive by using the folder's short name (for example, you use "admini~1" for the Administrative Tools folder).
CAUSE
In some cases, a folder's short name may be inadvertently deleted from the client's Partition Knowledge Table.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
