SYMPTOMS
When you run Windows Setup or start the Microsoft Hardware Diagnostic tool (Hwinfo.exe), you may receive an error message similar to the following:
When you click Details, the following information is displayed

is a string of alphanumeric characters.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your computer's date is incorrectly set to a date that is well in advance of the current date. For example, the current date is December 1, 2001, and your computer's date is set to December 1, 2058.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, set the correct date and time on your computer. To do this, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Date/Time.
- Click the Date & Time tab, set the correct date, and then click OK.
Method 2
You can also use the Date command to view and set your computer's date. To do this, follow this steps:
- Type date at the command prompt.
Your computer's current date is displayed.
- Type
mm-dd-yy
, and then press ENTER, wheremm
is the month,dd
is the day, andyy
is the year. For example, if you want to change the date to December 1, 2001, type 12-01-2001.
