SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook 2000, the program may not run, and you may receive the following error message:

Your computer has been upgraded from Windows 95 or Windows 98 to a later version of Windows. Outlook must configure itself for this version of Windows.

CAUSE

This issue can occur after you install Microsoft Office 2000 on a computer that runs Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 and then upgrade to Microsoft Windows 2000 at some later time. The Windows registration key does not remove the Office 2000 product codes from the computer during the upgrade.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove all Office products from the computer, and then modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ key in the registry.

Remove All Office Products

1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your Microsoft Office installation.

2. To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
   1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
   2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
   3. Click OK, and then click Exit.
   Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.

Modify the Office Key in the Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the 9.0 value under the following key in the registry:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
4. Quit Registry Editor.

You should be able to successfully install Office 2000 Premium and open all of the Office 2000 products.
