Article ID: 312230

Article Last Modified on 1/31/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Word X for Mac

This article was previously published under Q312230

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Microsoft Word X for Mac, your AutoCorrect settings may not be imported.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you upgrade your operating system from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X, and then upgrade Word in one of the following ways:

  • from Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac to Word X.
  • from Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition to Word X.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, copy the AutoCorrect List file from the preferences folder of the earlier version of Word. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: When you use this workaround, the existing AutoCorrect List on your computer is replaced with the AutoCorrect List from the earlier version of Word. In other words, the Word X AutoCorrect List is lost.

  1. Navigate to the following folder on your hard drive:

    Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences

  2. Hold down the OPTION key and drag the "MS Office ACL (8)" file or the "MS Office ACL (English)" file to the following folder on your hard drive

    Macintosh HD:Users:User name:Library:Preferences:Microsoft

where User name is the name with which you log on to the computer.
  3. When you receive the following message, click OK:

An older item named "MS Office ACL" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you're moving?

When you start Word, the AutoCorrect List from the earlier version of Word is available.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
