SYMPTOMS

When you try to view Web pages in Microsoft Internet Explorer after you install The Microsoft Network (MSN) version 5.1 and then connect to MSN, you may receive the following error message:

Page cannot be displayed

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you turn on the Use a proxy server option but no proxy server is listed in Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn off the Use a proxy server option in Internet Explorer, and then turn on the Automatically detect settings option:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. On the Connections tab, click the MSN dial-up connection in the Dial-up settings box, and then click Settings.
  3. Under Proxy server, click to clear the Use a proxy server check box.
  4. Under Automatic configuration, click to select the Automatically detect settings check box.
  5. Click OK to save the changes, and then try again to view Web pages in Internet Explorer.
