Error 1712 Is Generated When You Promote a Domain Controller to a Global Catalog Server

SYMPTOMS

When you promote a replica domain controller in a single domain to a global catalog server, the action is successful but the following entry may appear in the directory service event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTDS General
Event Category: Internal Processing
Event ID: 1168
Date: 10/29/2001
Time: 4:27:24 PM
User: Everyone
Computer: Servername
Description: Error 1712(6b0) has occurred (Internal ID 3160073). Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) interface is registered twice.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
