The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 , 3.01, 3.02, 4.0

SUMMARY

In versions of Word earlier than version 4.00, any fields or print merge instructions placed in the header or footer do not merge. Instead, they print out exactly as they are typed in, including Option+ symbols (<<). The ability to place merge fields in headers and footers was added in Word version 4.00.

To make a field print at the top or bottom of every page in earlier versions, put that field at the top or bottom of every page in the main document, instead of in the header or footer.
