Long Delay with No Prompt Between the Time When You Click Finish and When the Desktop Loads

SYMPTOMS

When you click Finish after you run the Windows XP Setup Wizard, there is a significant time delay before the desktop loads, with no apparent indication that events are proceeding as intended. Specifically, after you click Finish, the screen changes to a black screen with a mouse pointer, and may remain that way for a minute or longer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

The update that is described in this article changes the cursor to an hourglass (IDC_WAIT) cursor, and displays a "please wait" message.
