"Cannot Find Device File: En4060cv.vxd" Error Message Occurs When You Start Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall program or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

En4060cv.vxd

CAUSE

This issue can occur in the following situation:

You installed an Efficient Networks SpeedStream 4060 CIP/1483 external digital subscriber line (DSL) modem.

-and-

The modem has been removed or the driver files for the modem are missing or corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reinstall the Efficient Networks SpeedStream 4060 CIP/1483 DSL modem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Remove the SpeedStream 4060 DSL Modem from Device Manager

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Click to expand Network adapters, and then click Efficient Networks SpeedStream 4060 CIP/1483.
Click Remove.
When the "Confirm Device Removal" message is displayed, click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Method 2: Edit the Windows Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Remove the reference to the En4060cv.vxd file from the Windows registry. To do so:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate and click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlerSet\Services\VXD\EN4060CV
On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the File name box, type En4060cv, and then click Save.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When the "Confirm Key Delete" message is displayed, click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.
