SYMPTOMS
If you send a message from either Microsoft Outlook (by using Hypertext Markup Language [HTML]) or Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to a Contact in Active Directory with a NOTES target address (for example, a Lotus Notes user who is connected to Exchange 2000 by the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes), the message may be garbled.
Specifically, if you send a message that contains two consecutive spaces (represented in the HTML source code as ), those characters may be replaced by a euro symbol (€). This problem may occur if you use Japanese character sets on both Exchange 2000 and Notes.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1. This fix adds a new RTFSTRIPTAG registry key. Note that if you turn on the RTFSTRIPTAG registry key, it affects performance and causes higher processor utilization. Microsoft recommends that you test and size your hardware appropriately before you change the RTFSTRIPTAG key.
The RTFSTRIPTAG key functionality changes messages before they are converted from HTML to Rich Text Format (RTF), and before they are later converted to Notes format. The RTFSTRIPTAG key functionality changes sequences of non-breaking spaces (&nsbp; in the HTML source code) to simple spaces.
To turn on or turn off the RTFSTRIPTAG key functionality, you have to edit the registry.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To turn on or turn off the RTFSTRIPTAG key functionality:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LME-NOTES\Parameters\
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: RTFSTRIPTAG
Data type: REG_SZ
Value data: To turn on this functionality, set the value to "2". To turn off this functionality, set the value to "0". - Quit Registry Editor.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.
