SYMPTOMS

When you try to send a message by means of CompuServe's Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) server, you may receive the following error messages:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'user name@cs.com'.
Subject subject text
Account: 'imap.cs.com'
Server: 'smtp.cs.com'
Protocol: SMTP
Server Response: '556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.'
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Server Error: 556
Error Number: 0x800CCC78

-and-

Some of the messages in your Outbox Folder could not be copied to your Sent Items Folder. Your message could not be uploaded to the IMAP server. The server refused to accept it.
Subject subject text
Account: 'imap.cs.com'
Server: 'imap.cs.com'
Protocol: IMAP
Server Response: 'Command 'APPEND' not supported'
Port: 143
Secure(SSL): No
Error Number: 0x800CCCD2

If you receive the second error message, Outlook Express does copy the e-mail message to the Sent Items folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, verify that Outlook Express is properly configured to work with CompuServe's IMAP server.
