SYMPTOMS
When you run the Netdiag.exe support tool, Netdiag.exe may stop responding (hang) or generate a Dr. Watson error message during the DNS test.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when Netdiag.exe is testing DNS zones with a large number of name server records.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If you did not install the support tools by using Setup.exe from the CD-ROM, it will appear that the hotfix did not install. The .inf file is set to install the new Netdiag.exe to where the support tools were originally installed, by default, the %systemdrive%\Program Files\Support Tools folder. If you only need Netdiag.exe and don't need the installer (Netdiag.exe is not a protected file), run the Q310685_w2k_sp3_x86_en.exe -x command to extract the raw files.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
