SYMPTOMS

When you use a Terminal server to access a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Web site (the Web site address starts "https://%22), you are occasionally prompted to re-enter your logon credentials.

CAUSE

If you are using a Terminal server to connect to an SSL Web site that offers a non-trusted certificate, you are prompted to explicitly trust it. If you go to a resource that requires authentication (for example, Microsoft Outlook Web Access [OWA]), you must re-enter your credentials when any other user logs off.

When a user logs off, a global logoff event is detected by Crypt32. Crypt32 is used to signal all users to release any registry handles that can prevent roaming profiles from working correctly. The processes that must be notified are those in session 0 (services), but the event is picked up by all processes on the computer. When Microsoft Internet Explorer receives the signal, it flushes its certificate cache and open SSL sessions. As a result, all users who are connected to the non-trusted site must re-enter their credentials.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
