SYMPTOMS
When you are managing Exchange 2000 Server in a clustered environment, and an Exchange Server service terminates, the virtual machine that is hosting the terminated service (or the corresponding Internet Information Services service) may not go offline as it should after successful failover to another node. When you run MdUtil.exe, the virtual machine is listed as still running.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.
