SYMPTOMS
When you reconnect mailboxes on a cluster server, proxy addresses may be removed. This problem may occur in the following scenario:
- Exchange 2000 server is installed on an active/active cluster with mailboxes on each node.
- You delete one of the virtual server instances, and then re-create the cluster with the existing Messaging Databases (MDBs).
- You start Exchange System Manager, and then start the Mailbox Reconnect Agent.
The mailboxes are reconnected to the Active Directory user objects, but the proxy addresses no longer exist.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Reconnect command on the mailbox clears some attributes to ensure that the user is in a clean state; the Recipient Update Service sees the changes and re-creates the correct proxies. In hosting scenarios, this process may cause problems because Exchange System Manager and the Recipient Update Service are not aware of the hosting configuration. Therefore, Exchange System Manager does not know where to obtain all of the information that is required to link the user to the user's mailbox, proxy address, and other attributes.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
