XCCC: Internet Explorer 5 Prompts You to Reauthenticate Three Times Before Opening a Word or Excel Attachment

Article ID: 309708

Article Last Modified on 2/27/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q309708

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 to log on to your Microsoft Outlook Web Access Inbox, and you then try to open a Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel attachment, you are repeatedly prompted to authenticate. A reauthentication box appears three times before the attachment opens. This only happens with if you have Microsoft Office 2000 and Internet Explorer 5 installed.

NOTE: Similar behavior occurs with Internet Explorer 4.x on Microsoft Windows 98.

CAUSE

This behavior only occurs if you have Office 2000 installed with Internet Explorer 5. Office is trying to determine if it is accessing a WebDAV server, and whether it has read/write capability. To do this, it first sends an OPTIONS command to the host. The vroot requires authentication, so the host responds "access-denied." Office prompts for authentication to capture credentials, but then does not add them to the second OPTIONS request. After three tries, Offices displays the document.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a). For additional information about how to obtain Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
