BUG #: 352651 (SHILOH_BUGS)
BUG #: 57848 (SQLBUG_70)

SYMPTOMS

In the SQL Agent Properties dialog box, if you clear the Save copies of the sent messages in the sent items folder text box, the sent messages are not saved in the Sent items folder. However, the sent messages are stored in the Root directory of the source mailbox.

The e-mail messages are not visible to mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook and they remain indefinitely in the Root directory, occupying space and causing the client mailboxes to fill up.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can use the Microsoft Exchange utility, MDB Viewer, to view the hidden e-mail messages that fill up the mailbox. You can also use the MDB Viewer to delete those e-mail messages.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

To install the MDB Viewer you need the Mdbvu32.exe utility. The Mdbvu32.exe utility and the accompanying DLL files are on the Exchange Server 5.5 CD-ROM in either the Server\Support\Utils\I386 folder or the \Server\Support\Utils\Alpha folder.

Copy the following files to your computer:

  • Mdbvu32.exe
  • Propvu32.dll
  • Statvu32.dll
  • Xvport.dll

Steps To Reproduce Behavior

  1. Make sure that you clear the Save copies of sent message in the sent items folder text box. In SQL Enterprise Manager, define an Operator, and then send a test e-mail.
  2. Execute the Mdbvu32.exe file to start the MDB Viewer.
  3. The MAPILogonEx dialog box displays. Select the MAPI Explicit Profile check box, and then click OK.
  4. The Choose Profile dialog box displays. Select the profile you created in steps 1 through 3. Click OK.

NOTE: If the Choose Profile dialog box does not display, you are most likely already logged on to a profile. Exit and log off the client profile, and then try it again (exit Microsoft Exchange if it is running).
  5. On the MDB Viewer Test menu, point to MDB, and then click OpenMessageStore.
  6. In the Select Message Store To Open dialog box, select the profile that the SQL Agent is using, and then click Open. Leave the default for Open Mode as "Best Access."
  7. On the MDB Viewer Test Application menu, point to MDB, and then click Open Root Folder. Now, under the Message in Folder text box, this message appears:
