SUMMARY

This article describes step-by-step how to create a new virtual server in a Windows 2000 environment.

With the Virtual Server feature in Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, you can configure a single computer to host numerous Web sites where each Web site is distinct and separate, with separate Web content and permissions. To create a virtual server, you map a new Web site to the content directory that you want. This Web content can be on the local computer or on a remote share. Virtual servers are defined by a combination of the following three parameters:

  • The IP address that is assigned to the Web site
  • The TCP port number that is assigned to the Web site
  • The host header name that is assigned to the Web site

As long as one parameter is unique to each virtual server, they can run simultaneously on the IIS server.

For example, on an IIS server, you can have numerous Web sites that are all mapped to the same IP address, and that all use the same default port (80) as long as you assign a unique host header name to each virtual server .

How to Create a Web Content Folder

To create a new folder in which you can store the content for the Web site:

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. In the Folders list, click the folder in which you want to create the new folder, such as Inetpub.
  3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  4. Type the name that you want, such as Web Content, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: To maintain a high level of security, do not create the Web content folder in the root directory of the hard disk.

  1. Quit Windows Explorer.

How to Create a Virtual Server

To create a virtual server:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. In the console tree, right-click * server name where server name is the name of the server, point to New, and then click Web Site.

The Web Site Creation Wizard starts.

  1. Click Next.
  2. In the Description box, type a friendly name that you want to use to identify the Web site in IIS, such as Support Site, and then click Next.
  3. In the Enter the IP address to use for this Web site list, click the IP address that you want.

NOTE: If you select (All Unassigned) in the IP address list, the virtual server responds to all IP addresses that are not assigned to other virtual servers. In effect, this Web site becomes the default Web site.

  1. If you do not want the virtual server to use port 80, which is the default port for Web sites, type the port that you want in the TCP port this web site should use box.
  2. If you want to specify a host header for the virtual server, type it in the Host Header for this site box, and then click Next.

NOTE: For additional information about how to use host header names, see the "References" section in this article.

  1. In the Path box, type the path to the Web content folder that you have created. For example, C:\InetPub\Web Content.
  2. Click to clear the Allow anonymous access to this Web site check box if you do not want to allow anonymous access, and then click Next.
  3. On the Web Site Access Permissions page, click Next, and then click Finish.

The new virtual server is displayed under * server name in the console tree.

NOTE: The virtual server inherits the configuration and security settings that are specified for the WWW service in the master properties of the server. To view these settings, right-click * server name, click Properties, and then under Master Properties, click Edit.

  1. If the Web site is stopped, right-click it, and then click Start.
  2. If you want to configure Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000, right-click the new virtual server, point to All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions.

The Server Extensions Configuration Wizard starts. Click Next, and then follow the steps to configure FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site.
