256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, you may receive the following error message when you try to start Microsoft Outlook 2000:

Cannot start Outlook, a required component is missing. OMINT.DLL

If you try to reinstall Outlook 2000, you may receive the following error message:

Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the manufacturer used an image of Microsoft Office 2000 to install Office 2000 on your computer. The copy of Office 2000 that is on the image was created by using a transform, but the transform is not available on the Office 2000 CD-ROM that came with your computer. Therefore, the Setup program cannot find the transform when you try to reinstall Outlook 2000 from the CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, before you reinstall Office 2000, use one of the following methods:

  • Use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the existing copy of Office 2000.
  • Edit the registry to remove the transform value.

Using the Installer Cleanup Utility to Remove Office 2000

  1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation.

    For additional information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    290301 Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

  2. To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    3. Click OK, and then click Exit.
    Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.
  3. Reinstall Office 2000.

Deleting the Transform Value from the Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Create a verbose log, and then locate and write down the name of the Office 2000 transform.
  2. Start Registry Editor.
  3. Locate the transform value under the following key in the registry, where Current_User is your user ID:

    HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\{GUID}

  4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  5. Locate the transform value under the following key in the registry, where Other_Users refers to any other user IDs that are on this computer:

    HKEY_Other_Users\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\{GUID}

  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Find the ProOem1C.mst file, and then change the file name to ProOem1C.old.
  9. Reinstall Office 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Transforms are also referred to as modifications. Transforms customize the installation of a Windows Installer package at the time of assignment or publication. For example, a transform might specify a subset of a suite of programs.
