SYMPTOMS
When you use a Windows 2000-based computer and you disable network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), the call to the gethostbyaddr function takes approximately five seconds to return error 11004 (WSANO_DATA) for an unknown Internet protocol (IP) address.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because no Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) queries or broadcast queries are used when you disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Because of this, the gethostbyaddr function is expected to immediately return after a Domain Name System (DNS) query.
RESOLUTION
