Disabling NetBT on a Remote Access Connection Causes Communication Problems

SYMPTOMS

After you disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) on a remote access connection, you may receive the following error message:

System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found.

You may also receive other error messages when you attempt to connect to network resources on the remote access connection over port 445 (using direct-hosted server message block [SMB] over TCP/IP).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the remote access connection.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
