SUMMARY

You can use the Internet Information Services (IIS) snap-in to configure settings for the WWW and FTP services at the server, individual site, folder, or file levels. When you configure properties at the server level, these values are inherited, and become the default settings for all Web or FTP sites on the server. This article describes how to set the following default properties on an IIS server:

Master properties for the WWW and FTP Services
Bandwidth throttling
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) Mapping
Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

These settings can also be modified at the individual site, folder, or file levels. Note that in most cases, properties that are set at the individual site, folder or file levels override the server level settings.

Set Master Properties for the WWW or FTP Service

Set master properties on the server if you want to define a default configuration for all Web or FTP sites that are hosted on the server.

Set Master Properties for the WWW Service

To set master properties for all Web sites on your server:

Start Internet Services Manager, or open the MMC that contains the IIS snap-in.
In the Internet Information Services window, right-click * server name, and then click Properties.
Click the Internet Information Services tab.
Under Master Properties, click WWW Service, and then click Edit.
In the WWW Service Master Properties for * server name Properties dialog box, click the tab that you want, make the changes to the Web site configuration that you want, and then click OK.

If Web sites on your server are configured with different values, the Inheritance Overrides dialog box is displayed.

In the Inheritance Overrides dialog box, under Child Nodes, click the site or sites to which you want the new settings to apply, and then click OK. If you want all sites to inherit the new settings, click Select All, and then click OK.

All Web sites that are hosted on the server are configured with the settings that you specified. If you set properties for individual Web sites, the individual Web site settings override the server-level settings.

Set Master Properties for the FTP Service

To set master properties for all FTP sites on your server:

Start Internet Services Manager, or open the MMC that contains the IIS snap-in.
In the Internet Information Services window, right-click * server name, and then click Properties.
Click the Internet Information Services tab.
Under Master Properties, click FTP Service, and then click Edit.
In the FTP Service Master Properties for * server name Properties dialog box, click the tab that you want, make the changes to the FTP site configuration that you want, and then click OK.

If FTP sites on your server are configured with different values, the Inheritance Overrides dialog box is displayed.

In the Inheritance Overrides dialog box, under Child Nodes, click the site or sites to which you want the settings to apply, and then click OK. If you want all sites to inherit the new settings, click Select All, and then click OK.

All FTP sites that are hosted on the server are configured with the settings that you specified. If you set properties for individual FTP sites, the individual site settings override the server-level settings.

Enable Bandwidth Throttling

If the network or Internet connection that is used by IIS is also used by other services, you may want to enable bandwidth throttling to control the amount of bandwidth that IIS uses. This action makes bandwidth available for use by the other services. To enable bandwidth throttling:

Start Internet Services Manager, or open the MMC that contains the IIS snap-in.
In the Internet Information Services window, right-click * server name, and then click Properties.
Click the Internet Information Services tab.
Click to select the Enable Bandwidth Throttling check box.
In the Maximum network use box, type the value that you want to dedicate for use by IIS, and then click OK.

The bandwidth throttle limit that you set now applies to all Web sites on the server.

NOTES:

Bandwidth throttling limits the bandwidth that is used by static HTML files only.
If you set bandwidth throttling limits for individual Web sites, the individual site settings override the server level settings.

Configure MIME Mapping

The MIME mappings define the various file types that the WWW Service returns to Web browsers when a file is requested. To configure MIME types for all Web sites on your server:

Start Internet Services Manager, or open the MMC that contains the IIS snap-in.
In the Internet Information Services window, right-click * server name, and then click Properties.
Under Computer MIME Map, click Edit.
In the File Types dialog box, do one of the following:
- To create a new MIME mapping:

Click New Type. In the File Type box, type a file extension, and then type the MIME type followed by its associated file name extension in the form of mime type/ filename extension (for example, image/bmp) in the Content type (MIME) box. Click OK.

The new file type is displayed in the Registered file types list.

- To remove a MIME mapping:

In the Registered file types list, click the file type that you want to remove, and then click Remove. Click Yes when you are prompted to remove the file type.

The file type is removed from the Registered file types list.

- To edit an existing MIME mapping:

In the Registered file types list, click the file type that you want to remove, and then click Edit. In the File Type box, type the file extension that you want, and then type the MIME type followed by its associated file name extension in the form of mime type/ filename extension in the Content type (MIME) box. Click OK.

Click OK to return to the Internet Information Services window.

Your MIME mapping settings now apply to all Web sites on your server.

When you modify the MIME mappings for an individual Web site, folder, or file, only the changes you make are displayed in the Registered file types list for that Web site, folder, or file. If you then reapply the MIME mapping values on the server, the server-level MIME mappings override the lower-level MIME mappings.

FrontPage Server Extensions

If FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on your server, you can set default server extensions settings for all FrontPage-extended Webs on your server. To do this:

Start Internet Services Manager, or open the MMC that contains the IIS snap-in.
In the Internet Information Services window, right-click * server name, and then click Properties.
Click the Server Extensions tab.
Specify the settings that you want, and then click OK.

The settings that you specified now apply to all FrontPage-extended Webs on your server.
