Error Message After Installing a Hewlett-Packard 4400-Series Scanner on the Parallel Port

SYMPTOMS

You may receive an error message on a blue screen after you install a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 4400 or 4470 scanner on the parallel port.

CAUSE

Hewlett-Packard 4400-series scanners that do not have a Device ID ROM report an invalid Device ID string (all zeros) when they are queried for a Device ID. The Microsoft-supplied driver cannot validate the string, and a subsequent ID-string-length calculation on a USHORT value causes an underflow.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
