SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade to Windows XP on a computer that runs Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6 (SP6) and that has a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Colorado Travan internal 4- or 8-gigabyte (GB) tape drive installed, the upgrade report may state that the "Shuttle Sharer Parallel Port Device" is incompatible with Windows XP. As a result, Setup cannot continue.

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused by the software for the tape drive (HP CBII version 6.0). Although the HP tape drive may be an internal IDE device, and the hardware is supported, the software installs the drivers for both the parallel and the IDE versions of the tape drive. The parallel port driver is known to cause problems in Windows XP, and the upgrade cannot continue.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, first remove the HP CBII version 6.0 software, and then upgrade to Windows XP. The HP Colorado Travan internal tape drive is natively supported in Windows XP and does not require any additional software.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
